Soy beans and women’s health

cuisine

Soybeans are the backbone of many staple foods such as tofu (豆腐), miso (味噌), natto (納豆), and soy sauce (醤油). They’re rich in protein and essential for vegetarian and vegan diets.】

Soybeans and Women’s Hormones

Soybeans are rich in a compound called “isoflavones.” These isoflavones have a chemical structure similar to the female hormone estrogen and act as “phytoestrogens.”

Effects of Isoflavones

  1. Hormonal Balance Regulation: Isoflavones have estrogen-like effects and can promote the secretion of estrogen or supplement insufficient estrogen.

  2. Alleviation of Menopausal Symptoms: They are expected to alleviate symptoms of menopause. For example, they may help reduce hot flashes and mood swings.

  3. Maintenance of Bone Density: Isoflavones help in maintaining bone calcium levels and contribute to the prevention of osteoporosis.

  4. Skin Benefits: They aid in collagen production, improving skin elasticity.

Recommended Intake

The Food Safety Commission of Japan suggests a daily intake limit for soy isoflavones of 70-75mg. This equates to about 2.5 packs of natto, 300ml of soy milk, or 375g of tofu per day.

To avoid excessive intake, it is recommended to include other food sources, such as peas and rice meat, in your diet in moderation.
